When I read BM for the first time 20 years ago, I found the chapter headings as enigmatic and allusive as the text. Most significantly, the mention of "Tucumcari" instantly associated Sergio Leone's "For a Few Dollars More" with the narrative of BM. Going through each title (?) in the chapter headings lends potential events and context to the happenings in BM.
I am disappointed that I was not able to attend your presentation this past October. This is off-topic, but which Kafka texts did you use?
Hey Mike, sorry for the super late reply! I consulted a bunch of Kafka texts, mostly the Trial and Metamorphosis, but also some of the shorter texts, like A Knock at the Manor Gate... which I think provides a model for Alicia's encounter with the Archatron.
It's all good. I've been loaded with work myself. It's very interesting. Other than teaching Metamorphosis to HS sophomores, I haven't had time to revisit Kafka in years. The titles you mention are a great start for me to pick him up again.
Another reason I ask, is that I need firm ground to dig back into SM and TP. My first reading didn't prompt me to dig deeper with further reading which I'm sure both novels necessitate.
JVH,
